One thing I forgot, was my old 4 bay never worked correctly on firmware updates from the Drobo dashboard software, instead I had to always do a manual firmware update. From here I called Drobo customer support, and again I was in for a rude awakening. I attempted one more hard restart and the same thing happened. It went through the entire reboot, and then just as I received the tone of a new device being added to Windows, the Drobo 5D went into standby. On the installation failure the Drobo 5D rebooted and then attempted to come back up. This pinged my memory back to when I tried this on my Drobo 4 bay, and I remembered that I had had the same issue with it.

The firmware update on the hardware failed. I used all 5 drive bays and filled them with 2TB drives.

I installed the 5D on my main windows 7 64 bit machine, utilizing the USB 3 interface. However early in, I was totally out of space on my 1st generation Drobo so I purchased the Drobo 5D. When the Drobo 5D, 5 bay product was announced I did not immediately move to purchase one. This device has been stable for most of this time, and had worked as a external raid 5 enclose would be expected i. This is my earlier post when the problem first started.

I understand I running a Asus mainboard, but the USB3 drivers with most board companies are pretty much the same as long as the board is a Intel board. Sure they are no longer sold by Drobo, but there are plenty of them around. Their lack of ability to communicate, reach out to a customer who has a Drobo that was working perfectly before attempting a Drobo firmware update, and lack of management follow up is pretty telling. They have obviously spent a ton of money on marketing, just look at their current website. Sadly this seems to be the trend in business today and I hate to see Drobo go this route.

DiskWarrior provided a quick and easy solution, and while it did cost $119.95, it was a great tool that will probably come in handy the next time I have an issue with a disk. While there may have been command line methods for me to try to recover the file system, I was nervous as it was since I was messing with years and years worth of data. Unfortunately, Tech Support Engineer Google says this is a somewhat common occurrence. Whew! I confidently clicked replace, and within another minute or two the Drobo was once again mounted to the iMac. I was presented with the first view of my Drobo, which was an unreadable blob of storage and the second view, which listed all of the directories on my Drobo. I clicked Rebuild, and in a matter of minutes, DiskWarrior showed me it was able to easily locate my files and folders.įirst I previewed the changes, to make sure I wasn’t about to wipe my Drobo or do something else equally horrible to it. DiskWarrior was brought up a number of times as a quick and easy solution. The disk would still not mountĪfter some googling around, it seemed that there were a number of other Drobo (and other disk) users that encountered the same message. When I tried to use Disk Utility’s First Aid, it seemed to work, but there was a message “invalid content in Journal”. To me, this negated a hardware problem and I was left with troubleshooting the file system. I could see it in both Disk Utility and Drobo Dashboard, but other than that I could not access the contents. All of Drobo’s green disk lights were lit, and the blue capacity lights were correct. I’ve never had a problem with the FS, and the 5D ran faithfully for over a year until one day it wouldn’t mount to the iMac. I wanted something with more protection, and easier to manage. I suggested it since I was almost regularly recovering failed hard drives with pictures on them. Why did I get a Drobo 5D anyway? I was pleased with my Drobo 5S and we needed another disk array for primarily picture backup.
